Sometime ago I’d read with delight but also disbelief that China had 120+ million electric bikes in use. Currently travelling through the region I no longer doubt this figure. The roads everywhere are constantly filled with them and to the complete domination over petrol alternatives. The rapid uptake resulting from bans on motorbikes in most major cities.

In comparison to the “push bike style” electric bikes gaining traction in Australia, China is predominantly using “scooter style” electric bikes which even when they have pedals are seldom used.

Whilst uptake of electric cars is being hampered by lack of access to personal charging stations owing to the dominance of apartments and on street parking, the electric bikes have removable batteries that can be easily carried inside.
